On 19th January 2019, I organised a book launch function for the students who participated in my month-long Young Authors Workshop held in May 2018. This workshop was the first of its kind to happen in Rajapalayam. About 12 school going students (grade 7 to 11) took part in it - out of which 5 students stayed the course, and became authors.
Their books were:
You Are Not My Food by Harshada
The Magic Pot And The Prince of Amreetpur by Shreya Sri
An Amazing Armour by Siddharth Gopal
The Musical Jungle by Subarna
True Love by Advaitha Aravinth
A Quotable Life (my own book, a compilation of quotes)
The books were launched by educationists in the presence of parents, teachers, and well wishers. The chief guests were: Mr P Lohanatha Raja, Founder, Sri Ramanalayam, Mrs Brindha J Raghavan, Renganayagi Varatharaj College of Engineering, Sivakasi, and Mrs Rajavalli Rajiv, RJ Mantra English School, Virudhunagar.
At the event, students spoke for a few minutes each on their book, and the learning process. The launch function was held at Gandhi Kalai Mandram, Rajapalayam. Their books were kept for display and sale.
People might think that authors workshop is a great way to improve vocabulary and writing skills. But I think the primary benefit for the students is ‘confidence building’ - not ‘vocabulary building’. Students come to know that the books are written by people like themselves.
Further, throughout their school days, students get to read only what others write. At least during the holidays, they should be given the opportunity to write something that others can read.
A book launch function can be a motivation and recognition for the student authors. It would also be a memorable event. And many more students will come to know of the workshop.
A banner announcing the launch of the book event was kept in front of the venue. The event started at 6:30 pm, and was over by 8:00 pm. It went off very well with the support of the student authors, their parents, highly gracious guests, and the well wishers.
